The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill, and competence to apply crop pesticides using a boom sprayer in accordance with recommended safe practice.

Learning Objectives:

Learners will be able to
1. Describe how infestations of pests (weeds, diseases, insects and vertebrates) affect crop growth and reduce quality.
2. Describe the range of pest control methods available to farmers and growers.
3. Explain the terminology used to categorise pesticides for crop production, the factors affecting pesticide efficiency and the factors to be considered when selecting a formulation.
4. Describe principles and procedures for the safe handling, storage, application and disposal of pesticides including appropriate personal protective equipment.
5. Summarise laws and regulations relating to poisonous substances to include pesticide residues and maintenance of adequate records.
6. Explain the principles of application technology necessary for the proper application of pesticides in respect of applicator components, calibration, maintenance, field operating procedures and precautions.
7. Interpret pesticide label information in respect of precautionary symbols, product name, class designation, registration number, purpose, precautions, first aid instruction, toxicology information, disposal, notice to user, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and directions for use.
8. Prepare boom sprayer for work, including calibration, in accordance with safe recommended good practice and manufacturer's instructions.
9. Make up a pesticide spray mix in accordance with good practice including the pesticide product label dosage recommendations and the application area.
10. Store a boom sprayer and personal protective equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to manufacturer's instructions.
11. Apply a pesticide mix with a boom sprayer in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with recommended good practice.

Course Notes

Duration:
2 days tutor led on non-consecutive days. Total course duration is 50 hours. Participants will engage in independent learning outside of the formal training supported by an FRST tutor.

Training Materials:
Participants must bring PPE - masks, overalls, gloves, safety boots and hi vis jacket on the second day of the course. All learning/notes material will be provided to you for the duration of the course and you will be registered for certification though our centre.

Assessment:
Skills Demonstration - 60% (learner must achieve at least 40% in skills demo to pass)
Written Exam - 40%
Credit value: 5 credits

Entry Requirements:
A good command of the English language and a good level of numeracy and literacy. Candidates must be over the age of 16. 1 years experience operating tractors and sprayers is essential. An Application form must be completed and places are allocated on a first come first served basis.
Participants applying for this award should hold a level 4 and / or have relevant life and work experience.

Certification:
Successful candidates will achieve a QQI Level 5 minor award Boom Spray Pesticide Application (5N1797).

Learner Progression:
Learners who are successful on this programme may carry forward a credit towards a major award in the future. For example, the major award in Horticulture 5M2586. Successful completion of this component award enables the learner to transfer to programmes leading to other certificates where this component is a mandatory or an elective requirement. This module or its equivalent is required by the Department of Agriculture in order to register as a professional user of pesticides with boom spraying.

Learner Supports:
A classroom and work area for presentations will be provided, tractor crop sprayer in perfect working order, access to water and 1 acre land for operating sprayer and sprayer chart.

Learners will be supported by the tutor outside of formal delivery of the programme as required. Participants are expected to engage in independent learning outside of the formal training. Any additional learner support required must be made known in advance of training commencing to the FRS in order to make arrangements.

Practical learner supports may be accommodated, including, but not limited to; scribes, magnifiers, enlarged text, additional examination time allowances and other alternative assessment or reasonable accommodation requests. Please communicate required support when completing your course application form.
