Traditional Stone Wall Construction Skills 4N3131
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge,
skill and competence to build a range of traditional stone walls from
plans working under supervision
Contents
Learners will be able to:
*Outline the main types of traditional stonewall construction to
include common features and terminology used
*Identify stone the three main categories of stone used in
traditional stonewall construction to include the advantages for
each
*Read plans for traditional stonewall construction to include
interpreting measurements and terminology
*Set up profiles for the excavation and building of a stone
foundation, to include explain why stone projects past the wall
width and why larger stones are used
*Carry-out a field study on an existing wall or building recording
such information as the time wall was constructed, the type of
wall, the type of stone
*Set out using profiles and build a dry stone wall to given
dimensions and specifications
*Select stone that is suitable for building walls
*Prepare stone to include cutting and dressing rubble stone
leaving it ready for wall construction
*Use a given plan to construct and erect profiles, set out and build
a coursed mortared rubble wall to include building an suitable
coping of stone over the length of the wall
*Use a given plan and instructions to construct and erect profiles,
set out and build a mortared random rubble uncoursed wall to
include a suitable coping of stone to the tope and length of the
wall
*Carry out stonewall construction under supervision and in
accordance with appropriate health and safety procedures.
Assessment will include:
Skills demonstration 80%
Theory Test 20%

All learning material will be supplied by FRS Training You will be registered and certified with QQI through our centre.
Successful applicants will receive a QQI level 4 Certificate
Candidates must have a proficient level of literacy and numeracy
