Free Farm Safety Training for 300 Irish Families

Keeping Irish Farms Safe: Free Training Now Available for Farm Families

Farm safety is more than a checklist, it’s a mindset. In an effort to improve safety and wellbeing across generations on Irish farms, we have launched a free training initiative for 300 farm families, starting this August. With farming remaining one of the most dangerous professions in Ireland, this effort couldn’t come at a more critical time.

What Is the Farm Family CPD Initiative?

Farm Family CPD (Continuous Professional Development) is a new programme led by FRS Co-Op’s training division, in partnership with the Health & Safety Authority, IFA, FBD, Teagasc, and Irish farm families.

The initiative includes five free online courses designed to change attitudes and behaviours around farm safety. These courses are suitable for all generations, from younger family members to those over 65, and aim to address risks like:

  • Tractor and machinery safety

  • Chainsaw and quad bike operations

  • Livestock handling

  • Slurry safety

  • General farm wellbeing

Courses begin in August 2025. Families can register now at www.farmfamilycpd.ie.

Why Farm Safety Training Matters Now More Than Ever

Despite advances in technology, farming still accounts for 38% of all workplace fatalities in Ireland since 2014. A recent FRS Co-Op survey highlights the gap between risk and readiness:

  • Over 90% of farm workers use tractors daily

  • 80% operate chainsaws

  • 60% work with slurry equipment

  • Yet, less than 35% are interested in relevant safety training

This disconnect is costing lives. In fact, those over the age of 65 account for over half (56%) of fatal farm accidents since 2020.

“We’ve developed the Farm Family CPD training courses to cater for all age groups, with a specific course for those over the age of 65,” says Ben Fearn, Head of Operations at FRS Training.

What Makes This Farm Safety Training Different?

  • Free for 300 families – making it accessible to those who need it most

  • Designed by experts – in partnership with national safety and farming organisations

  • Family-focused – suitable for all generations on the farm

  • 100% Online – flexible learning at your own pace

  • Promotes lifelong learning – through a CPD-based structure

A Safer Future Starts with Training

As part of Farm Safety Week 2025, FRS Co-Op is urging farm families to take action—not just by being careful, but by being proactively trained.

“There’s no such thing as a ‘safe farm’. Only safe practices and responsible people make farming safer,” says Fearn.

Whether you’re 18 or 80, there’s something for everyone in the Farm Family CPD programme. Let’s work together to reduce risks, save lives, and build a culture of safety across Irish farms.

How to Sign Up

Registration is now open at www.farmfamilycpd.ie. Spaces are limited to the first 300 families, so don’t wait.
