Milking Course Helps Farmers Boost Quality & Efficiency

Milking Course Helps Farmers Boost Quality & Efficiency

FRS Training, in partnership with Teagasc, Animal Health Ireland, and the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine, deliver a Best Practice in Milking Course providing essential training for dairy workers and farmers.

A well-trained milker is the backbone of any successful dairy farm. With rising concerns about milk quality, dairy cow welfare, and the technical demands of modern milking, our Best Practice in Milking Course offers an invaluable opportunity for farmers and relief milkers across Ireland to upskill and refine their techniques.

This QQI Level 6 milking course is designed for dairy workers with at least 100 hours of milking experience, equipping them with industry best practices, hands-on training, and technical knowledge to enhance efficiency, compliance, and overall herd health.

Addressing Key Challenges in Irish Dairy Farming

With over 1.5 million dairy cows in Ireland producing more than 8 billion litres of milk annually, ensuring milk quality and animal welfare has never been more critical. The impact of mastitis, high somatic cell counts, and poor milking techniques can cost farmers thousands in lost revenue.

This 2 day training addresses these challenges head-on, covering:

  • Milk Quality & Safety – Reducing contamination risks and improving milk hygiene.
  • Dairy Cow Welfare – Recognising early signs of mastitis and lameness to enhance herd health.
  • Biosecurity & Disease Prevention – Minimising disease transmission risks.
  • Technical Proficiency – Identifying and addressing faults in milking equipment.
  • Risk Management & Compliance – Understanding food safety laws and hygiene regulations.

Here from past participants:

For Chloe Walsh, a teacher from Co. Laois, the Best Practice in Milking Course was a game-changer:

From originally only helping out on the family farm to working fully part-time, I was delighted to find a course that could help me fine-tune my dairy skills. The combination of expert-led theory and hands-on practical sessions gave me the confidence to tackle the Green Cert.

Another participant from Kilkenny echoed this sentiment:

“Even though I had years of milking experience, I didn’t realise how much I didn’t know. This course gave me a solid foundation knowledge heading into the busy Spring period.”

As Ireland’s dairy sector continues to evolve, ongoing training is essential to maintain high standards in milk quality and efficiency. Whether you’re a farm worker, relief milker, or dairy farmer looking to refine your milking techniques, this milking course provides the expertise needed to enhance your daily routine and overall farm performance.
